Celebrating 25 Years of Excellence in the UK

This year we're celebrating 25 in the UK, creating products and technologies to help you build safer, stronger homes and structures.

  • Branch 36 team opening

In 1994, company founder Barclay Simpson sent Andris Peterson – then the only UK employee - to launch Simpson operations in Europe. Building on well-established beginnings in America, where Simpson created his first joist hanger back in 1956, he made many acquisitions in the UK, Germany, France and Denmark. He amalgamated and grew those businesses, establishing SST as a European industry leader in structural systems research, testing and innovation.

In 1998 a purpose-built manufacturing facility and head office opened in Tamworth, Staffordshire, and while many of the original staff are still with the company today, they've been joined by natives of Tamworth and the surrounding areas, and Simpson has been a part of the local community ever since.

In 2009 Simpson Strong-Tie opened their UKAS accredited purpose built testing laboratory. Named after the man who was responsible for the growth of the company in Europe, the Andris Peterson EU Test Laboratory has enabled progression from one testing rig in a warehouse to Europe’s only UKAS accredited purpose built testing laboratory.

The world-class facility now conducts around 10,000 product tests annually. The lab has recently benefited from a £250,000 investment, which will enable it to double productivity.

Managing Director Malcolm Paulson says, “We believe that if we invest our time into our people our customers will reap the benefits. In my 14 years in role, I’ve seen the business grow and flourish. From that initial acquisition, our range has extended to include engineered structural connectors, fasteners and fastening systems, lateral-force resisting systems, anchors and bespoke one-off products.

The exciting thing is that recent European acquisitions in the concrete repair market can only help us grow even further bringing the quality and service for which we’re known into new markets. Since our European start 25 years ago, we’ve grown to over 600 employees with a presence in most European countries, helping make Simpson Strong-Tie the business it is today.”
