Do what you can day 2019

Wrapped up warm against the wet weather and plummeting temperatures, a team of 13 volunteers from our Tamworth factory, office and test lab gathered at Kingsbury Water Park on 15th November to help the rangers with their habitat work for our 2019 ‘Do What You Can Day’.

Wrapped up warm against the wet weather and plummeting temperatures, a team of 13 volunteers from our Tamworth factory, office and test lab gathered at Kingsbury Water Park on 15th November to help the rangers with their habitat work for our 2019 ‘Do What You Can Day’.

The annual event was inspired by our company founder Barc Simpson's Nine Principles of Business, which explain his philosophy about what makes a company successful. Barc said "It is our responsibility to reach out, in whatever manner we can to support others... Look for small ways to give back every day. Help out your neighbour, make time for others, do what you can."

Kingsbury Water Park in Warwickshire is a well-loved nature reserve with fifteen lakes set in over 600 acres of meadows and woodlands. The park is popular with families, walkers and runners, cyclists and wildlife enthusiasts, in particular birdwatchers.

The Rangers team Ben, Steve, Dewi and James, run a programme of ‘hands on’ outdoor activities encouraging children to discover the natural world. They are supported by a group of regular volunteers, three of whom joined us for the day.

In a week that saw flash flooding across the UK, we were lucky with the weather, considering the torrential downpour the previous day. 2019 has been a year of unprecedented flooding incidents at Kingsbury Water Park, with lakes unable to contain the water and several paths and the children’s play area under water.

The activity we were scheduled to take part in was impossible due to the conditions, but thankfully the resourceful rangers had a Plan B (and a C and D) up their sleeves. Wading through mud and dodging some seriously deep puddles we made our way to the environmental educational area, popular with school groups and children’s parties.

A busy year hosting den building and bushcraft activities had left the area in need of some serious tidying and maintenance, so we all picked from a pile of heavy duty tools and got started; felling and pruning trees, clearing overgrown vegetation, dismantling dens and sorting wood piles.

We certainly did everything we could to transform the area, ready for the park’s upcoming Christmas ‘Den Building and Marshmallows’ event, so that lots more families and children can get outdoors and enjoy nature and (muddy!) green spaces.

Ben and the rangers were very pleased with the results and expressed their gratitude to our team. “Thank you all for the fantastic work you have done. It has really brought a new lease of life to the area.”
